FAQ
Q: What is Model United Nations (MUN) ?
A: MUN is an academic simulation of the United Nations. Students are assigned to represent a nation in an engaging debate regarding the pressing moral issues that the global community faces. The different divisions in MUN cover a diverse range of topics including global health, environment, security, finance, economies, human rights, and development. MUN helps familiarize students with the UN procedures as well as the variety of global events that occur in the world. In addition, it teaches delegates the importance of negotiating and listening to others as they work with other nations in hopes of producing a comprehensive resolution to address the topic at hand. MUN is an enriching experience that encourages students to investigate and be considerate of perspectives other than their own.
Q: My school is quite far away. Is it possible to spend the night at ShawMUN ?
A: Yes! This year, as in previous years, we are able to offer our housing in our wonderful Lecky House facilities for delegations that are too far to drive. This will, of course, have additional charges, for both the rooming and two additional meals. A teacher chaperone/responsible adult will need to stay with the delegates overnight. Please indicate that you will require housing on the registration form when you register.
Q: How much does ShawMUN cost ?
A: This year, the conference fee for delegates not requiring accommodation is $55. This price includes dinner and the delegate social on Friday, and lunch on Saturday. The conference fee for delegates requiring accommodation for the evening is $95, which includes an additional breakfast and rooming for the evening. However, there is financial aid available by application. If necessary, please send your application here . A nominal fee will be charged to faculty advisors.
Q: When will I receive my country/committee assignment ?
A: An e-mail with your country and committee assignments will be sent to each delegate by Friday, March 14.
Q: How do I prepare for ShawMUN ?
A: Your preparation for this conference will vastly effect the experience that you have. Delegates should extensively research their topics, and understand the inner-workings of the issue you are preparing to debate. Furthermore, delegates should have a vast understanding of their countries foreign policies, as this will become essential knowledge during their committee. Finally, delegates should thoroughly know their Topic Background Guides (when they become available), as this offers your directors’ spin on the topic, and offers insight on how the flow of debate will be created in session.
Q: Where/when do I submit my position paper ?
A: Position papers are due by April 4th 2014. Please email your position papers to your committee directors.
Q: May I use my laptop/iPad/smartphone during committee sessions for research ?
A: At ShawMUN, all delegates are expected to come to the conference having already conducted the research. The use of Internet during committee sessions is strictly prohibited. However, the use of computers to write resolutions is permitted. Delegates who require specific information/facts pertaining to their country or the issues being debated may send a note to their committee dais, who may grant permission during committee sessions. Delegates should refrain from using cell phones during committee sessions.
Q: May I use my laptop/iPad/smartphone outside committee sessions ?
A: Outside of committee sessions, ShawMUN does not have any restrictions on the use of electronic devices.
Q: Can I win awards ?
A: Yes! Awards are distributed to delegates in each committee who exemplify their abilities as debaters, negotiators and problem solvers. Award recipients should demonstrate a passion for Model UN and a keen attitude towards the topic. Award recipients should also demonstrate leadership in their committees. Delegates who fail to submit a position paper will not be eligible for awards. See More... Awards for more details.
