House of Commons
Topic: Economic Prosperity
Hello, and welcome to the House of Commons of the Shawnigan Model United Nations 2014. The House of Commons is the heart of the Canadian democratic system, and we at ShawMUN are proud to bring it to you in such an immersive experience. Our staff is working very hard to ensure that this committee ranks among the best you'll ever participate in. The House of Commons is unlike any other committee that you will find, as it revolves around party politics rather than just individual opinions. When participating in the HoC, you will be pushed to the limits of your ability to work as a group. You'll need to carefully consider each of the opinions of your own party members, while also trying to sway the opinions of the other parties.
In the HOC, strength in numbers takes on a whole new meaning. The Conservative Party of Canada will be the current government, but that doesn't mean they have all the power. In this HOC, the Conservatives will have a minority government, meaning that the other parties can work together to undermine them. This year's topic for debate is Canada's plan for Achieving Economic Prosperity, a topic for which all the parties have vastly differing opinions. Below the surface of debate, each parties motives conflict. The tension boils until the true fiery emotional debate that only exists in the House of Commons erupts. Have you ever been in a debate and wanted to yell "Shame!" at your opponent at the top of your lungs? Or to give your fellow party member a round of applause mid speech for support? Then this is the committee for you, and we, the staff of the House of Commons, look forward to seeing you at ShawMUN 2014.
The House of Commons is an intermediate committee -- delegates with some MUN experience are preferred, though anyone with ability and interest may be chosen for this committee.

Craig Everett | Speaker of the House
Craig is delighted to have been honored with the position of speaker in this year House of Commons. Although a relatively inexperienced member of the Shawnigan Model UN he hopes to use his enthusiasm for politics and the democratic process to make this year's House of Commons the best it has ever been. Away from Model UN Craig plays Rugby and Cricket whilst keeping up to date with the goings on in the political world. Craig is looking forward to meeting all the MP's and watching them debate the problems that face Canada today.
Stuart Urquhart | Director
Stuart found his place in Model UN in grade 11.Since then, he has been in five MUN's: Shawnigan Lake School's 2009 grade 10 MUN, the Shawnigan Model UN, the Saint Michael's University Commonwealth Model UN, the Regional High School Model UN in San Francisco, and the Vancouver Model UN. As well as participating in MUN's, Stuart has taken leadership roles, such as being the Secretary General of the 2013 Shawnigan Lake School grade 10 MUN. Stuart is thankful that he has discovered his passion in Model UN, since it has built on his diplomacy and public speaking skills. Stuart is looking forward to, and proud to be running the House of Commons at ShawMUN 2014.
Jonathan Mostovoy | Director
Jonathan is currently a junior at St. Michael’s University School in Victoria, BC. Through his school’s immersive debating club, Jonathan developed an immediate attraction to MUN’s. Outside of MUN’s, Jonathan’s largest interest lies in business and is founder of several on-line businesses including Social Media Spike. He is also an avid skier, golfer, sailor and baseball catcher. Derived from his experience at numerous MUN’s throughout Canada, Jonathan knows exactly how to create a fun, engaging and provocative MUN experience. He strongly suggests you select House of Commons as your committee here at SHAWMUN 2014.
Kevin Dada | Director
Kevin is a grade 11 student at Brentwood College School and has enjoyed two years of Debate and Model UN. He has attended various MUN conferences including VicMUN, VMUN, CAIMUN, ConnectMUN, and has been a secretariat for BCMUN. Passionate of MUN, Kevin believes that MUN conferences provide a medium for youth to develop debate and public speaking skills along with diplomacy and empathy. Once a Minister of Parliament in a Model House of Commons, Kevin hopes to participate in the HOC again and is delighted to be part of the HOC staff.
