United Nations Security Council
Topic: Situation in Mali
The Security Council is responsible for the maintenance of peace and security in the world. Our committee is going to deal with the crisis in Mali, that has erupted in 2012. With a long history of prosperity, followed by colonisation, Mali has emerged as an independent country and from 1991-1992 enjoyed the multi-party rule. However, in 2012, the country, which was considered to be the successful West-African democracy has experienced the conflict with Mali government on one side and MNLA and MIA on the other. Delegates will present and defend the positions of their countries in the fields of conflict resolution and international intervention.
The United Nations Security Council is an advanced committee — only strong and experienced delegates are recommended for this committee, though anyone with ability and interest may be chosen for this committee.

Staff
Julianne de Gara | Director
Julianne de Gara is a grade 11 student at Shawnigan Lake School. When not spending seven and a half hours a week preparing for debate tournaments and MUN conferences, Julianne enjoys referring to herself in the third person, making obnoxiously loud passive aggressive commentary, and pretending to study. Julianne has attended CAIMUN, VMUN, BCMUN, RHSMUN and several other conferences, with ShawMUN 2014 being her first chairing experience. She looks forward to the high level of debate exemplified in the Security Council and hopes that all delegates put forward the time and effort to make ShawMUN a great experience for everyone involved!
Anna Vasylyeva | Chair
Anna Vasylyeva is a second-year Ukrainian student at Pearson college UWC. Being inspired by the ShawMUN experience last year, she became one of the staff members and chairmen of the national 7-day CampMUN last summer. Anna is passionate about economics, history and politics. Some of her hobbies include archery, discussions about communism and, most recently, the Ukrainian revolution. She is looking forward to enthusiastic discussions, provocative statements and unforgettable experiences at ShawMUN 2014.
Gemma Schladow | Assistant Chair
As a grade 11 American student at Shawnigan Lake School, Gemma Schladow is ecstatic to be co-chairing the United Nations Security Council this year. ShawMUN 2014 will be Gemma's second time staffing, and fourth Model UN experience. Outside of attending conferences such as BCMUN and VMUN, Gemma enjoys writing music, watching films, and reading feminist commentaries. She would like to thank each delegate in advance for their dedication in researching and building their arguments to make ShawMUN2014 the unforgettable experience it is bound to be.
