As UNDP’s trails on the topic of education reform within less developed countries, such as North Korea, Egypt, and Iran. The main focus is bringing more accessible education to women, and improving the standards of education. Australia mentioned that “the education in the middle east is lacking to ours and Americas, they need better education not only for boys but they also must focus more on females”.
A theme of cracking down on the middle east seemed to be apparent in the delegation. With alliances forming such as the “Alliance of Champions” with the following countries; Iran, North Korea, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mexico. In the fight for education, Korea feels threatened by the imposing ideas of other countries. Korean representative states, “America is full of fancy clothes, poisoned coffee, sunglasses, aeroplanes, equality. America is evil and backwards and Korea is for mens education and mens education only”.
It isn’t only just North Korea that is feeling the pressure from the rest of the committee, Egypt also is squirming under the thumb of the rest of the committee. Egypt representative said “ the Egypt curriculum is based on gender, women learn household knowledge and basic education and men the sciences and mathematics”. The rest of the committee is against the thinking of the “ Alliance of Champions”. They plan on ”cracking down on the dictatorship in the middle east and having the UN train the middle eastern government”. The middle east is on the verge of being americanized. America states that the middle east is uneducated, and not on par with their education system.
It will be interesting to see how these delegations will move forward with education reform, which according to the western countries is not a main focus of the Middle East and Asia.
