Amnesty International and Wikileaks Staff Writers
While the United Nations Security Council was passing their resolution regarding the situation in Mali, an unnamed journalist disclosed information to WikiLeaks staff concerning the recruitment of child soldiers in Mali. The writers at WikiLeaks headquarters, in collaboration with the humanitarian news agency Amnesty International, wish to further expose this horror of human rights violation to the public eye.
After further research, it was discovered that hundreds of children have been coerced into fighting with Malian forces. In order to ensure that the UNSC would take this into consideration in passing their resolution, reporters from Amnesty International interviewed delegates present at the committee meeting. The delegation of China stated: “China would like to see more of an active role from UN troops to defend the children of Mali. We send our deepest sympathies to the people of Mali.” Responding to inquiries about continual French involvement in Mali regarding the protection of children, the French delegate informed journalists: “France will continue its military presence and guarding of schools will be a major priority. We also call upon the global community to provide support to our troops.”
Representatives of Amnesty International and WikiLeaks applaud the inclusion of clause 4 in the UNSC resolution, which “Authorizes the placement of temporary troops within the region of Mali for protection and safety purposes”. It is evident that this assistance from the United Nations will be a factor in preventing the abduction of innocent children. This is a great step forward in the protection of human rights for Malian children and Mali as a whole.
